As temperatures drop in Westchester County, NY, mice start looking for warm, sheltered places to nest, and your attic is a prime target. Mice can squeeze through openings as small as a dime, making it easy for them to get inside through gaps around your roofline, vents, and exterior walls.
Once inside, mice can damage insulation, chew through wiring, and contaminate your attic with urine and droppings. The sooner you catch an infestation, the easier it is to prevent further damage.
Here are five signs you may have mice living in your attic.
If you’re hearing scratching, scurrying, or light chewing sounds coming from your attic at night, mice could be responsible.
Mice are primarily nocturnal, so they’re most active after dark when your home is quiet. You might hear quick movements across the ceiling or scratching inside the walls as they travel between nesting areas.
Larger animals like squirrels and raccoons can make similar noises, but mice typically produce lighter, faster sounds. The time of day and location of the noises can help narrow down what’s living in your attic.
Mouse droppings are one of the most recognizable signs of an infestation. They’re small, dark pellets, usually around 1/8 to 1/4 inch long, with pointed ends.
Look for droppings along attic walls, around stored belongings, and near disturbed insulation. Mice often travel along the same paths, so droppings may be concentrated in certain areas.
Don’t sweep or vacuum rodent droppings. Disturbing them can release contaminated particles into the air. Rodent waste should be handled using proper cleaning and safety procedures
Mice have front teeth that never stop growing, so they constantly gnaw on materials to keep them worn down.
In your attic, this can mean chewed cardboard boxes, damaged wood, shredded belongings, and exposed electrical wiring.
Chewed electrical wires are particularly concerning because damaged insulation around the wiring can create a fire hazard. If you notice gnaw marks or exposed wires, it’s important to address the rodent infestation and have damaged electrical components inspected by a qualified electrician.
Mice use attic insulation for shelter and nesting material. They’ll burrow through fiberglass or blown-in insulation, creating tunnels, compressed areas, and gaps in coverage.
Over time, this damage can reduce your insulation’s thermal efficiency, allowing more heat to escape through your ceiling during winter. Mice also leave behind urine and droppings that can contaminate the surrounding insulation.
If your attic insulation looks flattened, shredded, or disturbed in certain areas, it’s worth checking for rodent activity. Depending on the extent of the damage, contaminated insulation may need to be removed and replaced after the mice are gone.
A persistent, unpleasant smell coming from your attic can be another sign of a mouse infestation.
As mice nest and travel through the attic, urine and droppings can accumulate in insulation and other porous materials. Over time, this can create a strong, stale odor that may become noticeable in the rooms below.
A particularly foul smell could also indicate a dead rodent. Since moisture problems and other wildlife can cause similar odors, an attic inspection is the best way to identify the source.
If you suspect mice are living in your attic, the first step is to confirm the infestation and find out how they’re getting inside.
Removing the mice is only part of the solution. Any active entry points also need to be sealed to prevent new mice from entering. Otherwise, you could end up dealing with the same infestation again.
Once the mice are removed and the entry points are secured, any contaminated insulation or nesting materials should be addressed.
